DURBAN – Search and rescue officers from the Durban Police were called to Inanda after a body was spotted floating in the water below the Mzinyathi Waterfall, near Mpophomeni Road.
The body of an unknown person was handed over to the Inanda police officers at a landing zone above the waterfall.
An inquest docket has been opened, and the circumstances surrounding the death are under investigation, police said in a Facebook post on Saturday 8 August.
Sacred site
The Mzinyathi Falls is a sacred waterfall used for religious rituals, including baptisms by members of Ibandla lamaNazaretha, also known as the Nazareth Baptist Church. The falls and surrounding area are also used by a Rastafarian community living in a cliffside cave below the viewing site, according to Durban Tourism.

Location
Inanda is a large historical township just more than 20 km northwest of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. It borders Phoenix to the east and Ntuzuma and KwaMashu to the south.
