DURBAN -Police in KwaZulu-Natal have made a breakthrough in the brazen armed robbery at a jewellery store, arresting five suspects and recovering items estimated to be worth R3 million. The suspects, aged between 20 and 44 years, were arrested yesterday – Monday, 13 April – thanks to intelligence-driven information that police received.

Lt Col Paul Magwaza, spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal police, said police launched a full-scale investigation after the suspects robbed the store, which is located within Gateway Mall in Umhlanga on Sunday, 12 April. He said police officers from the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit as well as the EThekwini District Task Team swiftly acted on the intelligence-driven information, resulting in the arrest of the suspects.

“While processing the scene at the mall, police received crucial information that the suspects in the robbery were seeking a buyer for the stolen items at Umlazi. During the operation, members recovered jewellery valued at R3 million, including clothing, bank cards and mobile routers,” said Magwaza. He said the suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 April, facing charges of business robbery and attempted murder. Magwaza said investigations into the store robbery are ongoing.
