A local young female poet has drawn on the traumatic experiences of childhood to publish her debut collection, So deur die lewe / Along Life’s Path.
The 26-year-old Ahisha Samson, from Brackenfell, will launch her anthology on Saturday 2 May at the Durbanville Library.
In it, she shares her personal journey through life, socio-economic challenges, her faith and growth as a “coloured woman”.
“My personal journey is one marked by both deep challenges and resilience. From a very young age, I was exposed to trauma. As a two-year-old I was in the house when my mother was shot through the head. I remember seeing her lying on the floor covered in blood, thinking she had died. By God’s grace, she has survived and I’m truly grateful for her presence in my life.”
Instability and survival
“During my primary school years, I spent time in a children’s home, which further shaped my understanding of instability and survival.
“I grew up in a disadvantaged environment, moved frequently and attended five different schools. In 2024, I experienced another profound loss when my father died in a car accident. This deeply impacted me. These lived experiences form the heart of my poetry, in which I explore pain, healing and the realities many people silently carry, but also resilience, healing and self discovery.
“Despite these circumstances, I have remained grounded in my faith and hope. I have always believed my situation does not define my future. For me, life is about choice and I continuously choose growth, purpose and striving for better.”
With a degree in business management, Samson is also the only graduate in her immediate family, in which she is one of six siblings, “something I carry with both a sense of pride and responsibility.”
Focus fully on writing
“In November last year I made the decision to resign from my job for personal and professional reasons, and to focus fully on my writing and stepping into my purpose. I have also served as an ambassador for a non-profit organisation called, Write2BU, which focuses on helping children with writing. The organisation was established by my Grade 1 teacher, Adele Botha, with whom I share a very close relationship and who has been a mother figure to me.
“Since publishing my book people have reached out for guidance, whether it be feedback on their writing or advice on the publishing process, which has been incredibly meaningful.
“The purpose of my poetry collection is to inspire and uplift, and encourage people to appreciate their own stories and let their voices be heard with self-confidence.”
