Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) drew urgent attention. South Africa has identified its first case of pan-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. The SAASP prescribing guidelines, published this year, warn that the country sits on the brink of a post-antibiotic era.

“The identification of the first case of pan-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae marked a watershed,” the guidelines state.

Digital health and public preparedness

Sessions covered the governance of AI in healthcare and how technology will reshape pharmacy practice. Delegates also discussed preparedness for public emergencies and immunisation. Pharmacists played a critical role during Covid-19, dispensing vaccines and managing medicine supply chains.

A profession honoured

Tonight’s awards recognise professionals across categories including Community Pharmacist, Institutional Pharmacist, Legacy Pharmacist and Rising Star Pharmacist. The awards embody the SAPC’s vision: “Accessible quality pharmaceutical services for all.”

The conference featured a charity golf day on 10 October. Proceeds go to CANSA Durban for local cancer support programmes.

What happens next

Conference resolutions will guide SAPC’s policy positions. Previous conferences have shaped education standards and regulatory frameworks. This year’s outcomes could influence how South Africa prepares for NHI, manages medicine abuse and fights AMR.

For the 2 000 delegates, one question remains. Can the profession translate three days of discussion into action? As Motsoaledi told Parliament: the health system needs strengthening, with or without NHI.
