The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital is marking its 70th anniversary this week, celebrating seven decades of caring for children and families across South Africa. The milestone reflects a legacy built on medical excellence, compassionate care, community support and the belief that every child deserves access to specialised paediatric healthcare.
A legacy of care
Since opening in 1956, the hospital, located on Klipfontein Road in Cape Town, has become one of South Africa’s leading paediatric healthcare institutions, known for specialised lifesaving care and compassionate support.
Qhawe’s story
For Thulani Nxumalo, the phrase “everyone has a Red Cross story” is deeply personal, according to a statement by the hospital.
His two-year-old son, Qhawe Nxumalo, was referred to Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital after doctors found his oxygen levels were dangerously low. Specialists later diagnosed him with a congenital heart condition.
Thulani said the diagnosis was overwhelming and filled with fear and uncertainty, but the hospital’s care gave the family hope during a difficult time. He added that the experience has profoundly changed him both as a parent and as a professional.
“It teaches you to appreciate every moment and to never take your child’s health for granted. You become stronger, even when you don’t think you can be. I am a present father, and I feel truly blessed to work in an organisation that values family, with leadership that understands the importance of being there for your loved ones,” he said in the statement.
Qhawe has since undergone successful surgery for enlarged tonsils and continues to receive specialised cardiac care as doctors prepare for the next stage of his treatment.
Community-built impact
Dr Anita Parbhoo (CEO of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital) said the anniversary celebrates both the hospital’s history and the community partnerships that have helped it serve children for seven decades.
Over the years, the hospital has advanced paediatric healthcare through medical innovation, research, teaching and training, supported by the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, donors and community organisations.
Looking ahead
As it marks 70 years, the hospital honours its healthcare workers, support staff, volunteers and partners.
Its greatest legacy remains the thousands of children given the chance to grow, thrive and look forward to brighter futures.
