The reopening of the Molteno Reservoir has been delayed until Sunday 18 October after the refurbishment scope was expanded to include engineering inspections and bridge reconstruction.
The project was initially scheduled to start on Monday 20 July but was delayed following a change of contractor.
The planned shutdown and construction work were originally expected to be completed by the end of September.
The City’s Mayco member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, said the original plan was only to upgrade the bridge railings.
However, refurbishment of the bridge itself was later included in the project, requiring an engineering inspection and reconstruction work.
“This required an engineering inspection and reconstruction of the bridge, subsequently extending the closure time. The inclusion of this work prevented the need for two separate shutdowns which would have impacted the residents again in the future.”
Badroodien previously said they were upgrading the Molteno Reservoir precinct to improve the management of the historic site while ensuring it continues to serve as critical water infrastructure.
He said the total cost of the refurbishment is R4.2 million.
Badroodien said the City and its contractors are working towards the revised completion date.
“The City and its contractors are working diligently towards the completion date and should meet the deadline, should all go to plan,” he said.
The Molteno Reservoir is a popular spot for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts and also plays a vital role in Cape Town’s water supply system.
The contractor is currently attending to final work to ensure the refurbishment is completed to the required standard.
Badroodien said the project’s delay was due to both the change in contractor at the start of the project and the expanded scope of work once the condition of the bridge was assessed.
He said plans are on track to ensure the facility reopens on Monday.
