Visitors hoping to enjoy the popular Molteno Reservoir in Oranjezicht will have to wait a little longer, as the temporary closure of the site has been extended until Thursday 1 October.

The City of Cape Town says the reservoir is now expected to reopen to the public on Friday 2 October after weather-related delays slowed essential maintenance work.

The reservoir closed on Sunday 7 June and was expected to reopen on Monday 20 July.

The additional time will allow contractors to complete upgrades, including replacing the safety railings around the reservoir.

The City said the improvements are necessary to ensure the site is safe for public use.

During the closure, construction vehicles and materials will remain on site, while sections of the existing railings have been removed, making access unsafe.

Residents are urged to avoid entering the area until the work has been completed.

The Molteno Reservoir is a popular spot for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts and also plays a vital role in Cape Town’s water supply system.

According to the City, the annual maintenance programme is essential to ensure the reservoir continues to operate safely and reliably.

Mayco member for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien said in a statement that the City is upgrading the Molteno Reservoir precinct to improve the management of the historic site while ensuring it continues to serve as critical water infrastructure.

He said plans include new administration offices that preserve the site’s heritage, transferring the historic Graaff Electric Lighting Works building to the Water and Sanitation Directorate, and completing the required heritage approval process.

According to Badroodien, a feasibility study is also underway to determine whether the open reservoir should be converted into a closed one to strengthen water quality protection and long-term operational resilience.
