Fish Hoek Library will host its inaugural Literary Festival on Friday 23 October and Saturday 24 October, bringing two mornings of books, storytelling and community conversation to the Deep South.

The festival will run from 09:00 to 13:00 on both days and will feature local authors, storytelling sessions, children’s activities, panel discussions. The community engagement celebrates literature, language and local voices.

Library showcase

Organisers say the festival aims to showcase the library as more than a place for books, but also as a creative hub that connects readers, writers and families.

The programme has been designed to appeal to all ages, from young children discovering the joy of reading to adults engaging with local authors and topical discussions.

Local authors from Fish Hoek, Kommetjie, Simon’s Town, Kalk Bay and across the Cape Town metro are expected to participate, sharing their writing journeys and insights into the local publishing landscape.

Interactive storytelling

Children’s activities will include interactive storytelling and reading corners, while panel discussions will explore themes such as the importance of mother-tongue languages, community storytelling and youth literacy.

The event also aims to highlight the vital role of public libraries in fostering literacy, imagination and lifelong learning, especially in an era of digital distraction. By giving a platform to local voices, the festival hopes to inspire the next generation of readers and writers from the valley.

Members of the public, schools, book clubs and reading enthusiasts are invited to attend. Entrance is free, and the library encourages families to come early to take part in the full morning programme.

The Fish Hoek Library Literary Festival marks the start of what organisers hope will become an annual fixture on the cultural calendar.
