Fish Hoek author Gillian Leggat is excited to share the launch of her latest novel, The Fire that Still Burns: Faith in the Grip of Power, at the Fish Hoek library on Saturday, 12 September, from 9.30 to 11:30.
Leggat, who has more than ninety published books to her name, admits the new work is the most challenging novel she has ever written.
Decades of teaching
She tackles the themes of corruption and persecution through protagonists who are brave men and women fighting back against all odds.
Leggat’s career spans decades of teaching English and writing, mostly for educational publishers such as Macmillan.
Her writing journey took a new direction when she relocated from Johannesburg to Fish Hoek in 2013.
“I had a strong desire to tackle these themes in a novel where the characters fight back,” said Leggat.
She also joined the Vision Tutor Centre, where she has been teaching IGCSE and AS Language and Literature ever since, while also discovering a passion for Christian fiction.

Tackling issues
She says her picture books for young children cover topics from treasure hunts and rainbows to modern miracles and the story of how children were born.
She has shared these stories with learners at local schools, where children clap, dance and throw up their hands in joy while learning about faith.
Her teenage fiction deals with issues such as bullying, friendship, romance, dealing with sickness and death, using talents, being framed, and the stresses of moving home and being a good neighbour.
Her adult works include the semi-autobiographical Firm Foundations, set in Balgowan with her late husband, and Meltdown Miracles, exploring the Covid pandemic’s global impact.
Other titles include Headlines in Heaven, narrated by the angel Raphael, and the Mighty Master Plan series, covering biblical truths from Genesis to Revelation through the eyes of a sceptic, an angel, a young girl and a pastor. She has also created quiz card games, Faith Facts and Scripture Says, for wholesome family entertainment and church camps.
Leggat describes her mission as sending good seeds into the world through stories with compelling plots, convincing characters and life-changing messages.
Bookmarks and posters for the launch have been creatively produced by Foto First in Fish Hoek.
