The Fish Hoek Valley Museum and Fish Hoek Valley Historical Association invite all to a series of heritage and community events.
The monthly historical talk will be held on Thursday 11 June at 17:30 in the Fish Hoek Library side hall.
Our Lost History will explore local heritage issues, including the Dagbreek Cottage.
Heritage
Inspired by the recent application to demolish Dagbreek Cottage in Sunnydale, the Fish Hoek Valley Museum and the Fish Hoek Valley Historical Association have organised a meeting titled “Lost Buildings, Lost Heritage”, said Curator of the Fish Hoek Valley Museum, Sue Maude.
The aim is to reflect on the valley’s changing built environment and the increasing loss of historic structures through demolition, neglect, and redevelopment.
Many buildings that once formed part of the valley’s everyday life and working landscape have disappeared or survive only in altered form. In some cases they are still remembered by long-term residents; in others they have faded almost entirely from view and memory.
In this presentation, delivered by Trish Wood and Maude, we will highlight selected sites including Dagbreek Cottage and the Faerie Knowe Barn (Off the Road) in Sunnydale, the DIEC Cattle Station, the De Goede Hoop homestead in Noordhoek, the former Leper Hospital in Fish Hoek, and the Convict Station linked to the construction of Chapman’s Peak.
Events
Admission is R20 for members and R30 for visitors. Family history enthusiasts are welcome to attend the Family History Club meeting today (6 June), at 18:00. The session will focus on using military records.
On Wednesday 24 June, at 11:00, the popular History over Tea gathering will take place at the Fish Hoek Library side hall.
The theme, Growing Up in the Valley, encourages participants to share personal memories and stories of the area.
Refreshments will be served and attendance is free. The museum will also be open to the public on Saturday 27 June, from 10:00 to 14:00.
