Kurtley Beale returns to Wallabies fold after three year absence

Kurtley Beale is heading back into the Wallabies fold in the most unlikely of comebacks, earning a shock recall to Australia’s Nations Championship touring squad on Wednesday at 37 years old and three years removed from his last Test appearance. The veteran utility back’s selection raises eyebrows and questions in equal measure as coach Les Kiss scrambles to cover Hunter Paisami’s withdrawal for personal reasons.

Beale boasts 95 Test caps but hasn’t pulled on the gold jersey since 2021, making his recall one of the more surprising selections in recent Wallabies history. That he’s been preferred over younger options suggests either desperation or a genuine belief that experience trumps youth for the brutal November assignments against England, Scotland and Wales.

“With Hunter’s unavailability we’re excited by what Kurtley can bring to the group,” Kiss said. “He’s got 95 caps’ worth of Test experience and whilst he will primarily cover inside centre he has the versatility to play a number of positions across the backline.”

That versatility is key. Beale has operated at fullback, wing, inside centre and flyhalf throughout his career, providing Kiss with genuine positional flexibility in a touring squad that needs every option available. At 37, he’s unlikely to feature heavily in the starting XV, but as bench cover and emergency depth, he could prove invaluable.

Still, the optics are difficult to ignore. Beale was last named in a Wallabies squad in 2024 but suffered an Achilles injury that scuppered his involvement. He’s now been handed another shot despite not featuring at Test level for three years, a selection that suggests Australia’s depth issues remain acute.

Asking a 37-year-old who hasn’t played Test rugby since 2021 to perform in the northern hemisphere’s unforgiving November window is a significant ask.

Outside back James Ramm and halfback Kalani Thomas have also been added to the squad.

Beale’s recall is either a masterstroke that brings invaluable experience to a young squad, or a desperate roll of the dice. We’ll find out which when the Wallabies arrive in Europe and face the music.

For now, Beale gets one more crack at Test rugby. At 37, it might be his last.
