It astonishes me once again that the municipality has not yet made any concerted efforts about alternative power generation (Paarl Post, 7 July).

After all, they boast being a city of excellence, but they have yet to make any marked progress with generating power.

Stellenbosch has already converted many of their municipal buildings to solar and are claiming that in the not- too-distant future they will become the first municipality who is not reliant of Eskom for power.

Last week the mayor again made a number of empty promises as he usually does, but in essence never puts his money where his mouth is.

Again it is stated (for the umpteenth time) that they are working together with the Western Cape government on this matter.

Is our municipality not strong enough to take the bull by the horns and make their own decisions and pave the way forward with this?

In general I think the municipality is lagging behind. The town is concentrating on just allowing every development to go forward so that they can earn extra income which they need to pay off some serious debt that they have incurred. And then also give everything for free as hand-outs to those who do not contribute a single cent to our economy.

Long and short, we are very far from being a city of excellence.
