“On arrival at the scene, a man was found lying in the street with multiple open head wounds. The officer also found a stick with nails stuck in it near the body.”
This is the grim description of a scene to which a Wellington police officer was led on Saturday evening at 18:30 in Buccaneer Street in New Rest, Wellington.
According to Wellington police station commander, Col Johan Barkhuizen, the dead man was later identified as Luthando “Thando” Monqola (28), who lived in Buccaneer Street.
“Two suspects, aged 21 and 19 years old, were identified in relation to the murder and arrested.”
The circumstances that led to the brutal murder remain unknown, with no official confirmation from police.
Barkhuizen said only one suspect appeared in the Wellington Magistrates’ Court, while the other was released.
Later that same evening, 22-year-old Nkonyana Luzuko was stabbed in Wellington while walking to a party with three of his friends.
He was rushed to Paarl Hospital, where he succumbed to his knife wounds.
“A friend of the deceased [at the hospital told police officers] they were four friends walking to a party in New Rest,” Barkhuizen said. “He explained an unknown male approached them while they were walking and stabbed Luzuko.
“The exact location of the scene where the crime was committed has not yet been identified since the witness was unsure what the street name was.”
No arrest has been made in relation to the crime by the time of going to print.
