All Grade 4 learners are invited to enter the Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) 2022 Story Stars essay competition.
“The 2022 Grade 4 learners of the Western Cape can now write the next instalment of Felix and Felicity’s adventures,” says Education MEC Debbie Schäfer. “The idea behind the competition is to get learners excited about creative writing and the opportunities it can bring. By having an animated version of the story, learners can really see their stories come to life.”
Launched two years ago, Story Stars is an animated short film created by using stories that were written and narrated by Grade 4 learners of the Western Cape. Story Stars details the adventures of the characters Felix and Felicity, and the entrants of the competition expand the storyline with their ideas.
Primary schools in the province received Story Stars essay competition materials such as story books, learner books and cut-outs for the Grade 4 classrooms. The department encourage teachers of this specific grade class to allow their learners to read the story booklet, watch the animation film, and then finish the story by including themselves as a character using the learner booklets.
The winner of the 2022 Story Stars competition will have the opportunity to star and narrate their story, which will be developed into an animated film.
Schäfer added: “Teachers have been provided a matrix to assist them with marking the creative story and must submit the winning entry from their class to the WCED by 15 April 2022.”
The winner as well as 2nd and 3rd prize winners of the competition will receive a tablet, book bag and branded stationery. The winning school will also receive R10 000 for learning and teaching support material. The teacher who were involved will receive a R2 000 gift voucher.
All Grade 4 learners who would like to participate should inform their teachers.
