The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Paarl community are mourning the loss of Brig Gen Yoliswa Senokwanyane, a respected military health leader and public health advocate, who passed away on 14 June, just four days after celebrating her 57th birthday.
Born on 10 June 1969 and raised in Paarl, Senokwanyane remained closely connected to her hometown throughout her life. Her journey from the Cape Winelands to the upper ranks of the South African Military Health Service served as an inspiration to many and reflected a career marked by dedication, perseverance and excellence.
During her military career, Senokwanyane held a number of key leadership positions within the South African Military Health Service.
In a statement, the SANDF described her as “vibrant, energetic, eloquent and intellectually sharp”, adding that she “combined grace with strength of character”.
The SANDF further noted that she consistently demonstrated professionalism, commitment and exceptional leadership throughout her career.
At the time of her passing, she was serving in the chief directorate of transformation management within the SANDF.
Beyond her military responsibilities, Senokwanyane was a passionate advocate for public health, particularly in the fight against tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS.
She actively supported awareness campaigns, prevention programmes and community initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes and saving lives across South Africa.
Family members, colleagues and friends have remembered her as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister whose compassion and integrity left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
According to a statement by her family, her life and achievements inspired many, particularly young women and girls, demonstrating that courage, hard work and determination can overcome barriers and create opportunities for success.
A memorial service in her honour was held on 19 June at the Military Health Training Formation.
Her funeral service will take place on Saturday 27 June at the Thusong Centre in Paarl East.
Senokwanyane will be remembered as a proud daughter of Paarl whose lifelong commitment to service, leadership and public health has left a lasting legacy both within the SANDF and the broader South African community.
