Almost three years after work started on a BMX track adjacent to the Boy Louw sports fields in Paarl, the track has still not been completed.

In April 2019, the bulk earthworks for the construction of the exciting new BMX-track started.

This project was initiated by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) that decided to relocate its South African base from Pretoria to Paarl, after which the concept was tabled at Drakenstein Municipality’s Development Investment Forum.

Part of the motivation was that Drakenstein’s youth would be able to train at the international standard BMX track (according to UCI design).

The bulk earthworks for the construction should already have been completed by July 2019. The total cost of the construction was estimated at R700 000.

Concerned BMX and cycling clubs have been asking why the track has still not been completed and is in disarray? It is also being asked how much money has been spent in total so far on the track, which is also being deemed another municipal white elephant.

According to the Drakenstein Municipality the first phase of the track is complete and it is currently being fenced.

“The BMX track will now be further developed thanks to the investment of a company,” they said.
