As an enormous institution that prides itself on prime management, the Drakenstein Municipality should therefore know very well how budgets work.

Most households work according to budgets: eg groceries, rent, water and lights, school fees, and so on. But every now and then, the municipality throws you a curved ball and messes up one’s monthly budget (of which they usually take one huge bite due to their very high tariffs), because of faulty meter readings.

The past few years they in most cases guess a household’s electricity and water consumption on a monthly average. Then every five or more months, the actually read the meters and then there is suddenly a huge spike in one’s account.

Some people are able to read their own meters, but in my situation the electricity meter is in a locked municipal box in the road, and is read perhaps only twice a year.

This definitely is not the service rendered by a City of Excellence – our money does not grow on trees.
