Drakenstein Municipality has strongly objected to Eskom’s application for an electricity tariff increase of 20,5%.

Conrad Poole, Executive Mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, says the Drakenstein Municipality finds Eskom’s application to Nersa for an electricity tariff increase of 20,5% this year, totally unacceptable.

“I want to publicly state my objection to this proposal in the strongest possible terms. This year’s electricity tariff simply cannot increase more than the inflation rate of 5,5%.

“Drakenstein Municipality will be forced to pass on the increase to our consumers, who are already battling to make ends meet.

“Such a high electricity increase is not in the interest of growing the economy of Drakenstein, which is in a rebuilding phase. It will have a negative impact on our tourism industry, our agricultural sector, and our businesses.

“Our community cannot afford this. Many businesses had to close their doors and people have lost their income, or sadly, their breadwinners due to Covid-19. It is important for Eskom to understand the economic reality at ground level.”

The Executive Mayor has formalised this objection in a letter to Nersa and Eskom.
