An exceptional young woman who has conquered her physical boundaries due to cerebral palsy since her premature birth is close to trumping her 100 km mark on the treadmill.
“Originally I intended to walk 100 km in six months. But now only three months have passed and I am currently at 90 km since I began this incredible journey,” says Brittany McCormick.
Another challenge she set for herself, however, still rests heavily on the 25-year-old Paarlite’s shoulders.
“As of now, I have only 10 kilometres to walk and a few more thousand dollars to raise.”
To make her charitable dream come true, Brittany initially launched a crowd-funding campaign on BackaBuddy in April.
Her aim was set at a fund-raising goal of R70 000 to benefit Paarl School in Brackenfell, who will select the underprivileged beneficiaries most in need.
This idea was inspired by further limitations faced by Brittany when the pipes beneath her wheelchair cracked, and was in dire need of a service near the end of 2021.
She spent 10 days without her wheels, which was a newfound humbling experience, she says.
“I understood first-hand how reliant I am on my wheelchair, and how limiting life can be if your mobility is taken away from you.
“I began thinking of the people who aren’t in the financial position to afford a wheelchair, let alone get it repaired. This struck a string within my heart.”
Brittany had surpassed her own expectations of how fast she’d be able to cover 100 kilometers.
But the uphill battle seems to be reaching her crowd-fund target.
Since the launch of her campaign, Brittany has raised nearly R47 000 with kind contributions from 64 donors.
Brittany will fund a wheelchair for someone in need after every R8 500 raised.
“This journey of the purpose walk is not yet over, I still need your help to hit my target.”

“Thank you to everyone who liked, shared, featured the purpose walk, and interviewed me for their publication.
“A very special thank you to my family and friends for celebrating the small milestones with me that were huge achievements in small ways.
“The most and foremost special thank you to my creator of heaven and earth, thank you for using me as one of your messengers to show that no matter what happens in life anything is possible.”
