Young cyclists and role players in the cycling industry gathered on Tuesday at Faure Street Sport Stadium for the opening of the DSV Shift Academy.

It was an exciting moment for everyone as the academy is the first of its kind in Paarl. Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Drakenstein Executive Mayor Conrad Poole were also in attendance.

Fifteen young cyclists, aged 13 to 17, have already been chosen to be part of the academy. The cyclists will be coached by Elrick Kulsen, who has many years of experience as a coach in this industry.

The global transport and logistics company, DSV, is the main sponsor of the facility. Poole thanked DSV for making this investment in the lives of young cyclists in Drakenstein.

In his welcoming speech he added that Paarl is the cycling Mecca of South Africa, because of the solid reputation that has been built in this town.

“With the cycling heritage, culture and talent here, your investment will no doubt soon show a return on investment.

“Thank you for choosing Paarl and investing in our young talent.

“I can assure you that Drakenstein Municipality will continue to support the cycling fraternity as much as we can and together we will unearth many gems.”

The former professional cyclist, Malcom Lange, was also very hands-on in establishing the academy in Paarl. During his speech he said that this facility will help young people to stay away from bad influences.

“With this facility we want to help these youngsters, keep them off the streets and show them the right path. We needed a base for the kids. We couldn’t just let them finish school and go hang around the streets. Now we have created a facility they can call home.

“I believe one or two of our cyclists here today could be in the next Olympics. Nothing is impossible.”

Winde further added that the academy is a great place where youngsters with great talent can reach their goals. He also encouraged Poole to inspire residents of Drakenstein to cycle more.

“How amazing is it that you now have someone like Malcolm to help you achieve your dreams.”
