One man died and another two sustained injuries in an altercation with a motorist at the Mbekweni and Newton intersection in Jan van Riebeeck Drive on Saturday evening.

Police spokesperson WO Nceba Vanqa told Paarl Post ­that the police received a report of the stabbings at 21:05.

“On arrival we found three men had been stabbed. They were sitting in a grey Volkswagen. One of the victims showed no signs of life, while another was taken to hospital. The third victim refused treatment and he was taken away from the scene by his friends.”

Vanga said that according to the suspect, the three men started to swear at him at the traffic lights near Diemersfontein, and when he drove away, they followed him.

“At the Mbekweni traffic lights, the victims allegedly got out of the vehicle and approached the suspect. He also got out and an altercation started during which the suspect started to stab the men. A case docket of murder and attempted murder was registered.”

The victim who died on the scene was Dillon Sacks (29) from Paarl East. According to his father, David, he was told that another car randomly stopped in front of the car that his son and two friends were driving in.

“The driver of the other car got out of his car. My son and his two friends also got out of their car, and the suspect unexpectedly just started stabbing them. My son was stabbed in the heart. His one friend sustained stab wounds on his arms, and the other was stabbed in his neck. He was admitted to Tygerberg hospital.”

Sacks says shock waves went through his body when he received the news of his only son’s death on Saturday evening.

He had the difficult task of identifying Dillon’s body on Monday at the morgue. He said that Dillon’s sisters have also been traumatised by his death.

Vanqa said that the 25-year-old suspect was arrested on the scene. He appeared in the Wellington Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.. In an unrelated incident a case of attempted murder was opened after a 32-year-old man from P-Section in Mbekweni was shot in Phola Park early on Saturday at 00:50.

According to the victim, Vanqa added, he and his friend were walking in the street when he was shot. “He sustained a bullet wound to his waist and was taken to Paarl Hospital.

“The reason for the shooting is unknown at this stage. No arrests have been made yet, however, the suspect is known to the victim who will be able to point him out.
