Thanks to Mbeko Eco Club, the Click Foundation programme that helps learners with maths and reading was launched at Langabuya Primary school in Mbekweni this week.
In a pioneering move towards bridging the educational gap in South Africa, Click Learning, a dynamic NGO, has embarked on a mission that is revolutionizing the way young learners read for meaning and calculate with confidence. Their innovative approach, powered by technology, is not only improving foundational literacy and numeracy but also nurtures essential digital skills in under-privileged primary schools across the nation.
A sobering reality
South Africa faces a sobering educational reality – 81% of Grade 4 learners struggle to read for meaning, while a staggering 63% of Grade 5 learners lack basic mathematical knowledge. To compound this challenge, 90% of South African students transition to English as their primary language of instruction from Grade 4 onward. It’s a complex educational landscape that demands innovative solutions.
Empowering through technology
Click Learning’s visionary initiative is addressing these issues head-on. Their online programs empower young learners to work at their own pace, guiding their educational journey through technology. The impact of this approach extends beyond the classroom. Click Learning creates jobs for unemployed youth who serve as Click facilitators, supporting schools and teachers with program implementation. The heart of this initiative beats with passion and purpose. Two ambitious young black women whom I got into the programme, Ezethu and Desiree, were given job opportunities as Click facilitators due to their previous volunteer work in community projects. Their dedication exemplifies the grassroots spirit of Click Learning.
A vision for the future
As project manager of this initiative I am very excited about the launch. We have been planning this for months with the Click Foundation personnel and funders. I cannot help but emphasize the transformative power of education and my dream to see more engineers, AI builders, and technologists emerging from South Africa’s townships . . . especially from Mbekweni Paarl.
The impact is already evident as young students receive their own login details and eagerly engage with their daily lessons from Grades 2 to 7. These math activities not only boost their strategic planning skills but also nurture numerical sophistication. This initiative is not just about education; it’s about shaping the future of South Africa.
South Africa stands at a crossroads, and Click Learning is leading the way. By leveraging technology to empower young learners, they are sowing the seeds of change, nurturing a generation that will rise above challenges and transforming the nation’s educational landscape. With this dedicated initiative, it is sure to empower the next generation for success.
