A roller coaster incident at Six Flags Over Georgia killed one person and injured several others on Monday, prompting authorities to launch a major investigation.
Cobb County officials said detectives from the major crimes unit are investigating what happened at the theme park. County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid confirmed the death and said the family of the deceased had been notified.
“A terrible tragedy occurred today at Six Flags Over Georgia,” Cupid said in a statement. “I cannot imagine the horror the patrons and employees witnessed today, and my heart aches for the family who lost a loved one.”
Officials did not confirm how the person died or how the others sustained their injuries.
Local media identified the ride involved as the Goliath roller coaster, which reaches top speeds of 113 km/h and heights of 61 metres, according to the park’s website.
A Six Flags spokesperson told US media the park and local authorities responded immediately and are fully cooperating with the investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today,” the spokesperson said.
Theme park operator Six Flags has temporarily closed nine similar roller coasters across six parks “out of an abundance of caution”. The company operates properties throughout North America.
The incident follows Six Flags’ decision last month to permanently shut down a popular roller coaster at its California theme park after dozens of people claimed to have suffered brain damage while riding it.
