South African beachgoers are being urged to take extra care this weekend as dangerous sea conditions develop along the coastline.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has warned that a powerful spring tide will create hazardous conditions from this weekend through early next week, peaking on Monday, 5 January.

Spring tides happen when the sun, moon and earth line up during a full moon. This alignment creates a stronger gravitational pull on the ocean, producing some of the most extreme tidal conditions of the year.

NSRI spokesperson Andrew Ingram said anyone visiting the beach, fishing from rocks or hiking along the coast needs to understand how much stronger the tides will be during this period.

What to expect

The spring tide will create three main dangers. High tides will push water much further up the beach than usual. Low tides will expose far more of the seabed. And the gap between high and low tide will be bigger than at any other time of year.

This natural phenomenon can present potential dangers, including rip currents, which are intensified by stronger tidal flows at beaches, posing a risk to swimmers.

Coastal hiking trails may become completely cut off during high tide. Anglers fishing from the shore should be especially careful, as waves could reach well beyond normal safe areas. Strong currents in narrow channels and inlets will be unpredictable and dangerous.

How to stay safe

The NSRI advises swimmers to only use beaches with lifeguards on duty and to stay between the red and yellow flags. This is especially important for avoiding rip currents, which become much stronger during spring tides, particularly in the late afternoon and early evening.

Check the daily weather forecast from the South African Weather Service and look up tide times before heading to the beach.

Beach authorities and emergency services are on high alert and ready to respond quickly to any incidents.
