A flight from Johannesburg was grounded at King Phalo Airport in the Eastern Cape this morning after a bomb threat was reported from a private number. All 184 passengers safely disembarked, with bomb disposal units and emergency services on scene. The airport remained open with flights departing and arriving as normal. Police urged the public not to speculate while investigations continue.
Meanwhile, Tshwane residents have been told to stop drinking tap water after more than 400 people fell ill, most of them children under four. Tests found E. coli in water from the Bronkhorstspruit treatment plant, which went without chlorination for three weeks. No deaths have been reported and no cholera was found in patient samples. President Cyril Ramaphosa says national government has intervened and hopes to resolve the crisis within days.
Back in the Eastern Cape, 65-year-old Janine Lochrenberg is being remembered as a treasured member of the open-water swimming community after a fatal shark attack at Orient Beach in KuGompo City. “The ocean was Janine’s happy place,” her swimming group said, calling her a gentle person who quietly did what she loved most. Beaches in the area have been closed and the municipality has warned beachgoers to stay out of the water until further notice.
