The Western Cape’s provincial police says nobody as been arrested yet after a 22-year old woman was shot in Delft last week, in a murder that is allegedly linked to extortion. Lisand Sondlo was allegedly killed after her father, a local tavern owner, refused to pay “protection money”. Extortion is a huge issue in Cape Town, especially in the poorer, suburbs where gangs of extortionists terrorise businesses to give them part of their income.
Walking from local business
Sondlo was walking home from a local business when she was shot in the face, close to her father’s house. It is alleged that a group of extortionist recently visited the father demanding that he pay them. When he refused he was warned that something is going to happen to his family.
Word on the street is that Sondlo’s killing is a message from the murderers that they mean business. According to Captain FC van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, says there are no new developments to report to the media at this stage. “Kindly be advised that the matter you are referring to is still under investigation,” he says.
