Four new provincial police commissioners — three men and a woman — are expected to set the policing agenda, leading the provinces to greater heights. They are Lieutenant General Sizakhele William Dyantyi (Western Cape), Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams (North West), Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers (Limpopo) and Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise (Mpumalanga). They officially assume their five-year terms of office today, 1 August, following the announcement by the Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Dimpane, who expressed confidence in the quartet’s ability. The proceedings began on Wednesday in the Western Cape, continued on Thursday in North West and concluded on Friday in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Dimpane indicated that their appointments form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership within the South African Police Service (SAPS) in line with the organisational renewal programme and to reinforce the organisation’s commitment to professional, ethical, accountable and effective policing in support of the #SAPSResetAgenda. “Under the #SAPSResetAgenda, our mission is clear: we are rebuilding a professional police service founded on ethical leadership, integrity, accountability, discipline and operational excellence,” said Dimpane.

Western Cape: Dyantyi holds a Master’s degree, an Honours degree, a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree and a National Diploma in Policing. His career spans 34 years of distinguished service, having served in various operational and leadership roles across the Eastern and Western Cape. He is widely respected as a seasoned Station Commander, Cluster Commander and District Commissioner, with a proven track record in crime prevention, operational policing and strategic leadership.

Mpumalanga: Modise holds a National Diploma in Policing and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Public Administration. Her policing career has spanned 37 years, serving predominantly in the Free State. She is widely respected for her commitment to crime detection and community-centred policing, with extensive experience in the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, where she focused on investigations involving women, children and other vulnerable groups.

Limpopo: Scheepers holds a National Diploma in Policing and a National Diploma in Theology. With nearly four decades of experience in SAPS, he is a seasoned law enforcement officer and an experienced leader in the fight against crime. He is also a trained hostage and suicide negotiator, bringing operational expertise and crisis management experience to his new role. He previously worked in Gauteng, policing high-crime and complex operational environments. His leadership roles include District Commissioner and Deputy Provincial Commissioner in Limpopo. He served in the South African National Defence Force before joining SAPS in 1988.

North West: Adams holds a National Diploma in Policing and has 34 years of distinguished police service. His leadership experience extends beyond specialised operations, having served as Cluster Commander of Potchefstroom, District Commissioner of Bojanala Platinum District, Commander of the Thabazimbi Tactical Training Academy and District Commissioner of Mangaung. His most recent position was Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for policing in the Free State. His career began in Public Order Policing before progressing through specialised operational environments, developing tactical policing capabilities within SAPS.
