BLOEMFONTEIN — As the festive season approaches, public and road safety in Mangaung have come under intense scrutiny. Whilst this period should be one of joy and family celebration, the reality is that residents face heightened risks due to inadequate enforcement, failing infrastructure, and municipal complacency.

Critical Road Safety Concerns

Mangaung’s road network remains plagued by multiple safety hazards that pose serious risks to both motorists and pedestrians:

  • Infrastructure deterioration: Roads are riddled with potholes, poor signage, and malfunctioning traffic lights, creating dangerous conditions throughout the metropolitan area
  • Inadequate traffic management: The festive season traditionally sees increased traffic volumes, yet municipal traffic services remain under-resourced and reactive rather than proactive in their approach
  • Insufficient enforcement: Reckless driving, speeding, and driving under the influence continue to claim lives, with current enforcement measures proving insufficient to deter repeat offenders.

Action on Road Safety

The DA in Mangaung has recently launched a petition to restore safety to Mangaung’s roads. Residents can sign the petition at: https://petitions.da.org.za/p/mangaung-roads

Crime levels in public spaces, shopping centres, and transport hubs typically rise during the festive season. However, visible policing and municipal safety patrols remain inconsistent, leaving vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities—particularly exposed.

Poor crowd management and inadequate safety campaigns further compound these risks, whilst unregulated fireworks and festive gatherings increase the likelihood of injuries and fire hazards throughout the metropolitan area.

Urgent action required

They call on the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality to implement immediate measures:

  • Deploy additional personnel: Increase traffic officers and law enforcement across high-risk areas during peak festive periods;
  • Repair critical infrastructure: Address potholes and traffic light malfunctions with urgency to prevent accidents;
  • Launch awareness campaigns: Implement multilingual public education programmes on road safety and responsible festive conduct
  • Establish joint operations: Coordinate with SAPS to ensure visible policing and rapid response to criminal activity.

Commitment to accountability

“We reaffirm our commitment to radical accountability and oversight. Public safety is non-negotiable, and the festive season must not be marred by preventable tragedies caused by municipal neglect,”said Cllr. Kabelo Moreeng, DA Councillor Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality.

“Mangaung residents deserve safe roads, secure public spaces, and a government that prioritises their lives above complacency. The time for excuses has passed—immediate action is required to protect the lives and safety of all residents during this critical period.”
