BCMM on high alert as severe weather warning issued for damaging winds, rains

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) is on high alert as the Buffalo City Metro Disaster Management Centre braces for severe weather. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 6 Orange warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

According to a statement issued by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM), the BCMM Disaster Management Centre is on high alert following a Level 6 Orange warning issued by the South African Weather Services (SAWS) for damaging winds and rains.

The statement read: “According to the level 6 SAWS warning for disruptive rains, damaging winds are also leading to damage to settlements, properties and infrastructure over Buffalo City Metro.

“Due to the warning, the BCMM urges communities and road users to exercise caution when traveling. We also urge communities to be vigilant and report to their respective ward Cllrs any disaster-related incidents, or stormwater blockages.”

The statement assured residents that all emergency response role players are on high alert for any eventuality.

The statement further added: “We are already observing the development of strong winds and rough seas that are coming from the western coastline.

“Our beaches emergency teams will monitor these wind developments closely as they intensify.”

“According to the SAWS warning, the cold front arrived in the Western Cape yesterday September 18, resulting in showers and rain over the southwestern parts, spreading to the Garden Route and Little Karoo by the evening and to the Eastern Cape today, Thursday, September 19.

“It will be cold to very cold over parts of the Western Cape Interior and the Eastern Cape on Thursday.

“Strong to near-gale force winds with rough seas of 4,0 to 6,0 m are likely along the Western Cape coast, spreading to parts of the Eastern Cape coast overnight and to the coast of KwaZulu-Natal tomorrow.”
