BLOEMFONTEIN – One person died and one was critically injured when a patient transport vehicle of the Free State Department of Health collided with a motor vehicle on the N8 near Mandela View.

One lane of the road is still closed for traffic and road users are advised to be cautious when approaching the area.

The accident, involving more than 10 people, happened at about 08:14 and emergency services were alerted.

The transport vehicle, which ferried patients from Ficksburg to Bloemfontein, collided with the light motor vehicle after this vehicle’s tyre had burst and the driver lost control.

Priority-Care Ambulance Services was dispatched to the scene. Along with ER24, Netcare911, FS EMS en Maponya911, they helped to triage the multiple patients.

Two patients trapped in the vehicles, were rescued by the Mangaung Fire and Rescue Team using jaws of life.

One patient was declared dead on the scene. One was critically injured and another 14 was injured and transported to the Pelonomi Trauma unit, as well as the National District Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Law enforcement agencies are still on scene carrying out investigations.
