Morocco has filed formal complaints with CAF and FIFA following Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final. The Moroccan Football Federation submitted the referrals on Monday. They concern incidents involving Senegalese players and supporters during the Rabat match.
The fixture descended into chaos during added time of normal play. Senegalese players protested fiercely against the referee’s decision to award Morocco a penalty. They walked off the pitch in anger, halting proceedings for nearly 20 minutes. Senegalese fans at the opposite end of the stadium threw chairs and other objects. Some supporters attempted to breach security barriers and enter the field of play.

Morocco’s federation stated these acts significantly impacted the match and player performance. The disturbances affected the Atlas Lions’ concentration and mental preparation for a crucial penalty kick. Morocco subsequently missed the penalty that could have secured their first African title in 50 years. The governing body announced it will pursue legal procedures through CAF and FIFA. The complaint addresses Senegal’s withdrawal from the field and the events surrounding that decision.
Morocco maintains the referee’s penalty decision was correct and justified. The federation claims specialists unanimously deemed the call appropriate. It believes the referee acted within the laws of the game.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino condemned some Senegal players for creating the unacceptable scenes. His intervention highlights the severity of the incidents and football’s governing body’s concern. Play eventually resumed following an appeal from Senegal star Sadio Mané. The Al-Nassr forward persuaded his teammates to return to the pitch. His leadership proved crucial in restarting the match.
Senegal scored the match’s only goal just four minutes into extra time. The strike clinched a dramatic victory for the Teranga Lions. Several Moroccan media outlets on Monday criticised Senegal for displaying a lack of fair play. They accused the team of unsporting behaviour that tarnished the final. The criticism reflects widespread anger and disappointment across Morocco.
The controversy has overshadowed what should have been a celebration of African football. Morocco now seeks redress through official channels whilst Senegal celebrates their continental triumph. The outcome of the complaints could have significant implications for future tournaments. CAF and FIFA face difficult decisions regarding potential sanctions and disciplinary measures.
