Eastern Cape Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa has expressed deep sadness following the tragic incident at Xhwili Clinic near Mthatha, in which two female security guards were shot.
One of the guards, Sinovuyo Sita (28), sadly lost her life, whilst the other, Nomaphelo Botoman (48), sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical care.
Capa strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a senseless and disturbing act of violence against women and those entrusted with protecting public facilities.
“We are shocked and deeply pained by this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, and we wish the injured guard a full and speedy recovery. No one should lose their life or be harmed in the line of duty, especially whilst protecting spaces that serve our communities,” said Capa.
She added that the department is working closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
“We trust that the law enforcement agencies will leave no stone unturned in their investigation. As a department, we shall cooperate fully with the police and provide any support necessary to ensure that justice is served. Our clinics and hospitals must remain safe spaces for our staff, our patients and our communities.
“Strengthening safety in and around health facilities requires a collective effort, and we call upon all stakeholders to work together to prevent such incidents.”
Traditional leader from the Bhityi area, Chief Bhovulengwe Mtikrakra, said they condemn the act and want the police to arrest the perpetrators.
“We condemn this act because it is now affecting community members — the clinic is now closed. People have to spend money to travel to other areas to get medication. It is painful, and this has nothing to do with us. We suspect it was a conflict amongst security officers, but we shall host a meeting to discuss the matter further,” said Mtikrakra.
Police spokesperson, Captain Welile Matyolo, confirmed that Bityi Police are appealing to anyone with information about the suspect or suspects who fatally shot the victims.
“Information at police disposal confirms that the two female security guards were abducted from the duty room and shot behind the clinic in an open field. The deceased’s body was found stripped naked with two bullet wounds to the head, whilst her colleague was rushed to hospital afterwards,” said Matyolo.
He added that cases of murder, attempted murder, and rape have been opened at the Bityi Police Station.
Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspect or suspects is urged to contact the Bityi Detectives Head, Warrant Officer Mlilo, on 083 688 6571, or call Crime Stop on 086 00 10111, or contact the nearest police station.
MEC for the Department of Health spokesperson, Camagwini Mavovana, said the clinic will be reopened this week, following a meeting that will be held by stakeholders and the management of this department.
