The FNB Maties proved they’re serious contenders for silverware with a gutsy 30-26 victory over table-topping FNB NWU Eagles in a pulsating top-of-the-table clash at a blustery Danie Craven Stadium on Monday night.

This was Varsity Cup rugby at its nerve-shredding best, a match that had absolutely everything. With semi-final spots up for grabs in the penultimate round of the competition, both sides threw caution to the wind despite the swirling conditions, serving up a proper arm-wrestle packed with momentum swings and crucial moments.

The opening exchanges saw both sides probe for weaknesses, trading penalties in the gusting wind as they felt each other out. But it was the Maroon Machine who struck the first decisive blow when they were awarded a penalty try after the Eagles collapsed their rumbling maul just five metres out. Sensing blood, Maties opted for the power play, with Louis Fourie adding the extra five points to hand the hosts a commanding 12-point cushion.

Eagles captain Stephan Krugel saw yellow for the infringement, and the home side wasted no time exploiting their numerical advantage. CJ Erasmus bulldozed over after a sustained barrage inside the Eagles’ 22, extending the lead as Maties took a 15-point advantage into the sheds.

But if anyone expected the visitors to fold, they clearly hadn’t been paying attention. The Eagles emerged from the dressing room with real intent, scoring twice in a breathless eight-minute spell to turn the contest on its head. Raniel Turner got them on the board with a crucial seven-pointer, before an end-to-end passage of play saw Maties denied at one end and the Eagles punishing them at the other. Leejay Petersen applied the finishing touches to a stunning Point of Origin effort that began on their own try line, handing the visitors a slender one-point lead.

The see-saw battle continued as Keanuh Michaels restored Maties’ advantage following a sublime 50-22 from MC van Heerden Smith. But just 120 seconds later, Logan Janeke slipped through tired tackles to dot down, the conversion sailing between the uprights to put the Eagles 26-23 up with 12 minutes remaining.

The Maroon Machine refused to buckle. Keeping their composure and working through the phases, they battered away at the dogged Eagles defence until, with just four minutes on the clock, Louw Du Toit scooped the ball from the ruck, sold a gorgeous dummy and powered over to reclaim the lead.

Van Heerden Smith then showed ice-cold nerves, using the wind to his advantage as he slotted a tricky conversion that stretched the margin to four points, just enough breathing room as Maties held firm in the dying stages to deny the Eagles a late winner.

The result shakes up the race for the semi-finals heading into the final round, with the Maroon Machine proving they’ve got the bottle and the belief to challenge for the title.
