WELKOM – A Phomolong man has been successfully convicted and sentenced to 23 years for the brutal murder of his girlfriend in 2024.

On 26 October 2024, at approximately 18:26 in Phomolong, Palesa Suzan Katane (31) was at her boyfriend’s residence when a dispute erupted.

Fatal Domestic Violence

The argument escalated, resulting in the suspect physically and sexually assaulting the victim. The suspect then fatally assaulted Katane by attacking her with a garden spade.

Hennenman Police were immediately dispatched to the scene, where Katane was certified dead. The suspect was arrested on the same day of the incident.

Thorough Investigation

The investigation was handled by Sergeant Sethabela Moroenyane of the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, and the matter was subsequently brought before the Free State High Court sitting in Welkom.

The 37-year-old accused, Sabata Isaac Masa, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 23 years of direct imprisonment.
