BLOEMFONTEIN — The Bloemfontein High Court has sentenced Thabiso Andries Hoye to 22 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Mariam Brand, following his false report to police about the circumstances of her death.

On Sunday 15 September 2024, Hoye arrived at Bainsvlei Police Station claiming that he and his girlfriend had been attacked by three unknown African males at a plot in Ednan Avenue, Bainsvlei.

Police and emergency services personnel rushed to the scene and discovered the bloodied, lifeless body of Brand near the gate. The victim had sustained a bruised face, an open wound to her left hand, and multiple stab wounds to her back.

Investigation reveals truth

Detective Sergeant Mokonenyana Mokhele responded to the scene and initiated a preliminary investigation. A drag trail on the dirt road led to the discovery of blood-stained headgear, lip balm, a broken beer bottle, and a sealed beer quart at the primary crime scene.

A murder case was opened at Bainsvlei Police Station, and Hoye, who had reported the alleged attack, was subsequently arrested as evidence mounted against him.
