POLOKWANE – A 39-year-old man has been arrested for possession of illegal explosives following an incident near the Beitbridge Border Post on Friday (9 January) evening.
The suspect was apprehended at approximately 23:00 in the Musina policing area after South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members spotted him and another man carrying large bags during routine patrol duties.
When the pair noticed the officials, they dropped their bags and fled in different directions. Whilst one suspect was swiftly caught, the other managed to escape.
A search of the abandoned bags revealed explosives, including 25 Carmex safety fuses and 125 blasting cartridges.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing a charge of possession of illegal explosives.
