DELMAS – Police in Mpumalanga arrested a 43-year-old man after discovering illicit cigarettes concealed in water tanks on a truck in Sundra.

Delmas police officers, working with members of Sundra Police Station and security companies, arrested the suspect on 5 December at approximately 22:00 following information regarding illicit cigarettes being transported in water tanks.

Officers stopped a truck with two trailers in Sundra. The load consisted of twelve 5 000-litre water tanks.

Upon investigation, police found that the tanks were stocked to capacity with cartons of illicit cigarettes of different brands.

Police recovered 25 pallets of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R17.4 million.

The suspect from the Kingdom of Eswatini was arrested for possession of illicit goods and is expected to appear before the Delmas District Court on Monday, 8 December 2025.
