CAPE TOWN – Police are searching for three suspects who were trying to hijack cars on the N2, near Mew Way, on Wednesday 19 February.

Provincial police spokesperson Const Ndakhe Gwala said Makhaza officers, together with Metro Police, reported three armed suspects on the N2 attempting to hijack motorists. “The suspects fled towards Khayelitsha and members gave chase,” he said. “The chase continues.”

Ward 93 councillor Thando Pimpi described the incident as shocking. He urged the City to deploy more boots on the ground. “No-one is safe in our areas. If the criminals can go all out and hijack cars on N2 that means they mean business. We need the City to deploy more officers everywhere, not on N2 only.”

Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith also confirmed the incident stated that according to reports shortly before 14: 00 three male suspects were seen trying to stop motorists near Mew Way.

“Law Enforcement officers along with Traffic Services responded within minutes, but the suspects fled into the thick reeds. This incident serves as a stark reminder that improved walling along the N2 is urgently needed to keep our residents safe from brazen attacks. The City continues to deploy close to 100 officials to the highways as part of our Freeway Management Plan.”

Smith added that law-enforcement teams would continue to monitor the area and urged the public to report all suspicious activity to the Public Emergency Call Centre on 021 480 7700 or 107 from a landline.
