The match betwen UWC and CPUT will be nothing short of a display of champagne rugby.

When FNB CPUT and FNB UWC lock horns at 17:00 on Friday, two contrasting philosophies will collide. On one side stands Samukelisiwe Madonsela, the detail-obsessed technician fine-tuning every aspect of his game. On the other, Danston Cloete leads with championship ambition and a vision extending far beyond a single season.

The Western Cape derby promises fireworks as CPUT’s meticulous preparation meets UWC’s legacy-building mission in a fixture that could define early-season momentum. Both teams won their opening clashes, but it was UWC who amde the bigger impact.

Madonsela was excellent in the match against the Madibaz last week, scoring a brace to get his team over the line but he deflected individual praise, instead highlighting the collective effort that drove CPUT’s performance. Where some players chase headlines, Madonsela obsesses over technique, positioning, and executing his role within the broader game plan.

“The team executed the game plan really well, now it’s just those smaller details we need to iron out as a team,” Madonsela explained with typical understatement.

His approach is refreshingly grounded, rooted in a mindset forged since grade six when he first represented his primary school’s first team.

“I just focus on what I need to do and remember that I’ve done whatever it is many times in practice before,” he said, revealing the mental discipline underpinning his performances.

Wearing the FNB CPUT jersey carries profound meaning for the winger, who recognises the sacrifices made by those who came before.

“Great men and women have sacrificed a lot for us to get to this point, so it’s always a special moment to represent those people.”

Across the pitch, Danston Cloete leads FNB UWC with a different kind of intensity. The skipper doesn’t just want to win matches, he wants to transform the entire programme into a Varsity Cup powerhouse.

“Our main goal is to qualify for the FNB Varsity Cup, but also to raise the standard of UWC rugby and compete consistently at Cup level,” Cloete declared.

“We want to be a team that is respected for our work ethic, our discipline and the way we represent the university on and off the field.”

The BA Sport Science student, in his final year at UWC, has instilled standards rooted in accountability, consistency, and brotherhood. His leadership draws from an upbringing where nothing came easy.

“I didn’t come from a background where things were always easy, but I learned at an early stage the value of hard work, discipline and gratitude,” Cloete explained.

“Rugby became more than a sport for me, it became a space where I learned responsibility, respect and how to work with people from different backgrounds.”

Cloete leads through actions rather than empty rhetoric, setting non-negotiables that define UWC’s culture.

“We want every player to take ownership of their role, arrive prepared and train and play with intent every single day. If we stay connected as a team and keep improving week by week, the results will follow.”

When the whistle sounds, detail meets destiny. Madonsela’s quiet excellence versus Cloete’s championship vision. CPUT’s meticulous game management against UWC’s brotherhood-driven intensity.

Neither side will take a backward step. The game doesn’t reward hesitation, and both leaders have made it clear their teams arrive ready to impose themselves.
