Liverpool FC is officially planting its flags on African soil.
In a landmark move for the club’s global expansion, the Premier League giants have confirmed the opening dates for their first standalone retail stores in South Africa, bringing the “Anfield experience” to one of their most passionate fan bases.
The expansion begins in Cape Town at the Canal Walk Mall on 12 May, followed quickly by a second opening in Johannesburg at the Mall of Africa on 15 May. These launches mark the 24th and 25th standalone stores for Liverpool FC globally, cementing its status as the sports team with the largest independent retail footprint in the world.

A massive fan base finds a home
The decision to choose South Africa as the club’s first African retail hub is backed by staggering numbers. South Africa is home to an estimated 12,7 million Liverpool fans, more than any other football club in the world can claim in the region. Last season alone the club drew a cumulative 37 million TV viewers across the country.
“South Africa has a deep and passionate Liverpool fan base and we’re proud to create new ways for supporters to connect with the club,” said Lee Dwerryhouse, senior vice-president of merchandising at LFC.
These store openings are an important moment for us as we bring the first official standalone retail stores to the region for the first time.
Legendary celebrations: Grobbelaar and the silverware
The store openings are just the beginning. The club has scheduled a ‘week of activity’ from 17 to 21 May to celebrate the arrival with local supporters.
The festivities will be headlined by a true Reds icon: South Africa-born legend Bruce Grobbelaar. The former goalkeeper, who earned six league titles and a European Cup during his 13-year tenure at Anfield, will be making special appearances to meet fans.
Highlights of the Launch Week include:
- The Champions League Trophy: Fans will have a rare opportunity to see “Old Big Ears’ up close.
- Mighty Red: The official club mascot will be on-site for younger supporters.
- Official launch events: Formal celebrations will be held in Cape Town on 19 May and Johannesburg on 21 May, featuring cultural activities and fan engagement events.
As the club continues to grow its international presence these stores represent more than just a place to buy kits; they are a permanent bridge between Merseyside and the millions of South African supporters who have long cheered from afar.
Supporters are encouraged to follow the stores’ official Instagram account for real-time updates on launch activities and guest appearances.
For many in South Africa it seems they truly will never walk alone again.
