Rassie Erasmus has thrown the Lions a lifeline. The Springbok coach has released Quan Horn and Boan Venter from national duty to bolster the Johannesburg-based franchise for Tuesday night’s Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry clash against the All Blacks at Ellis Park, and the men in red and white have responded by naming their strongest possible side to face the touring New Zealanders.
This isn’t a development squad getting a hit-out. This is the Lions loading the bullets and preparing to fire them at an All Blacks side that’s already dispatched the Stormers, demolished the Sharks, and subdued the Bulls during their South African tour.

The reinforcements from Erasmus are significant. Quan Horn starts at fullback, his class and composure adding vital quality to the Lions’ backline. Boan Venter bolsters the front-row depth from the bench, providing scrummaging grunt when the All Blacks’ pack begins to tire in the altitude.
And surrounding those Springbok additions, the Lions have assembled a side featuring intriguing newcomers, Sikhumbuzo Notshe, Hyron Andrews, and Boeta Chamberlain all named amongst the replacements, and experienced leaders determined to claim a famous scalp under the Ellis Park lights.

Francke Horn leads from the back
Captain Francke Horn will lead from number eight, anchoring a loose trio completed by Siba Mahashe at blindside flanker and Batho Hlekani at openside. It’s a mobile, hard-working back row built for the kind of high-tempo contest the All Blacks will bring to Johannesburg.
The Lions will need that mobility. New Zealand have played ball-in-hand rugby throughout their tour, testing opposition defences with rapid transitions, slick offloads, and relentless support play. Horn’s leadership and work rate will be crucial in denying the visitors the kind of quick ball that’s powered their previous victories.
Backline blend: Class and pace
The backline features a compelling blend of class and pace. Quan Horn anchors proceedings at fullback, his experience and skill under the high ball vital against an All Blacks side that kicks intelligently and chases aggressively.
Henco van Wyk returns from injury to start at outside centre, adding genuine quality to the Lions’ midfield alongside Richard Kriel. Chris Smith orchestrates from flyhalf with Nico Steyn providing service from scrumhalf.
Out wide, Kelly Mpeku and Erich Cronjé offer pace and finishing ability on the wings, players capable of punishing any defensive lapses if the Lions can create space in wider channels.
Bench intrigue: Newcomers get their shot
The replacements bench carries genuine intrigue. Sikhumbuzo Notshe, Hyron Andrews, and Boeta Chamberlain are all newcomers to this level of intensity, but they represent the kind of fresh energy and fearless ambition that can trouble tiring opposition in the final quarter.
