South Africa’s comedy elite will converge on Cape Town soon for what organisers are calling an unprecedented showcase of local stand-up talent.
Laughter Is Culture, on Saturday 18 April at the Grand Arena, GrandWest, will feature 14 of the country’s leading comedians on a single stage. The event aims to attract 5 000 attendees for one of the largest comedy gatherings in the city’s entertainment history.
David Kau, a veteran with nearly three decades of experience, will host the evening. Kau has witnessed the industry’s evolution from small community venues to international streaming platforms.
Line up
The line up includes Loyiso Gola, who built an international career in London and New York before returning to South Africa, brings his sharpened perspective. Mpho Popps, known for making large audiences feel personally addressed, joins alongside Celeste Ntuli, whose devoted following has grown through years of precise comedic craft.

Veteran performers include Skhumba, renowned for turning everyday stories into comedy gold, Trevor Gumbi, whose timing appears effortlessly precise, and Chris Forrest, an industry stalwart who continues commanding rooms after decades in comedy. The bill also features Kagiso KG Mogadi, Dillan Oliphant, Virgil Prins, Roni Modimola, Ntosh Madlingozi, Yaaseen Barnes and Mbali Gudazi.
Power of comedy
“Comedy has always been a powerful way for South Africans to process life,” said Kau. “This event is about celebrating that on a massive scale.”
South African stand-up has traditionally served as more than entertainment, functioning as a space where societal complexities get addressed through humour in rooms full of people who understand every reference.
The event brings together performers who typically headline separate shows for a single evening at GrandWest’s premier venue.
Doors open at 18:00 and the show starts at 19:00.
