ABU DHABI – Lando Norris achieved his childhood dream on Sunday, claiming his first Formula One drivers’ championship with a composed third-place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The 26-year-old British driver secured the title by a margin of just two points ahead of Max Verstappen, who had dominated the sport for four consecutive years.

The emotional victory completed McLaren’s first drivers’ and constructors’ title double since 1998, with Norris finishing behind race winner Verstappen and teammate Oscar Piastri at the floodlit Yas Marina Circuit.

“That’s it mate, you are world champion, world champion!” his race engineer announced over the radio as Norris crossed the finish line.

A tearful Norris responded: “Thank you guys, you made a kid’s dream come true.”

Emotional Podium Celebration

Speaking on the podium beneath the desert lights, Norris reflected on his achievement: “I haven’t cried in a while, I didn’t think I would cry but I did. I want to thank my mum, my dad, they’ve supported me since the beginning.”

The victory marks a significant milestone for British motorsport, with Norris becoming the first British world champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2020. It also represents McLaren’s 13th drivers’ championship, adding to a legacy that includes legends such as Emerson Fittipaldi (1974), James Hunt (1976), Niki Lauda (1984), Alain Prost (1985, 1986, 1989), Ayrton Senna (1988, 1990, 1991), and Mika Häkkinen (1998, 1999).

Strategic Battle Under Pressure

The championship fight proved to be a tactical masterclass, with Norris demonstrating remarkable discipline under extreme pressure. Any mistake could have handed the title to either the relentless Verstappen or his teammate Piastri, who had led the championship standings for 15 Grand Prix races this season.

“As we’ve seen many times, anything can happen. So I just kept pushing. I wanted to fight to the end,” Norris explained. “They certainly did not make my life easy this year. But I am happy!”

The race marked the first time since 2010 that the championship was decided by a contest involving more than two drivers, adding extra drama to the season finale.

Team Celebration and Reflection

McLaren CEO Zak Brown praised both drivers’ performances: “That was exciting, a little too exciting, awesome. What an effort, Lando and Oscar, what a fantastic season! I’m so proud of our drivers, we let them race to the end.”

For Norris, the achievement represents the culmination of a nine-year journey with McLaren.

“It has been a long journey with McLaren, I’ve been with them for nine years. For me to bring something back to them, I feel like I did my part for the team this year so I’m proud of myself.”

Race Results and Championship Standings

Verstappen claimed his fifth Abu Dhabi victory and eighth win of the season, finishing 12.594 seconds ahead of Piastri, with Norris a further 3.9 seconds behind in third place. The result extended the Yas Marina Circuit’s remarkable record of 11 consecutive winners from pole position.

Despite losing his crown, Verstappen remained philosophical about the outcome: “I’m definitely not disappointed. I am proud of everyone. We never give up.”

Piastri concluded the championship in third place overall, having been overtaken by his teammate following the Mexican Grand Prix.

The remaining points finishers included Charles Leclerc in fourth for Ferrari, George Russell (Mercedes), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Esteban Ocon (Haas), Lewis Hamilton in eighth for Ferrari after starting 16th, Oliver Bearman (Haas), and Nico Hülkenberg, competing in his 250th Grand Prix for Sauber.

McLaren had previously secured the constructors’ championship in Singapore last month, marking their return to the summit of Formula One after more than two decades.
