Increased rainfall in the Pretoriuskop area of the Kruger National Park has raised concerns, with the potential closure of Phabeni Gate at short notice should conditions worsen.

Persistent rainfall continues to affect parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, including areas within the Kruger National Park.

Earlier staff and guests had to be evacuated from the Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger after floodwater from the Letaba River entered the facility.

JP Louw, spokesperson for SANParks, urged visitors to remain alert to official updates and signage.

He said no day visitors are permitted entry into the Kruger National Park and added that game drives and walking trails remain suspended until conditions improve.

“Access to the park is limited to essential delivery vehicles, airport transfers with valid flight tickets, officials and guests with confirmed accommodation bookings at Berg n Dal, Skukuza, and Pretoriuskop,” he said.

On Thursday 15 January the South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued an historic Red Level 10 impact-based warning for disruptive rainfall across parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

According to the SAWS, weather conditions are expected to gradually improve from Monday 19 January, when only a 30% chance of showers and thundershowers is forecast over the affected areas.

More stable conditions are expected from Tuesday 20 January onwards, with minimal chances of further rainfall, allowing river levels and saturated soils to slowly recede.

Members of the public are encouraged to follow SANParks’ official communication platforms for verified updates.
