Singer Ayanda Apools, from Jeffrey’s Bay, has used his tough childhood to inspire him to sing from his heart, as a featured performer on the song titled Ilizwi Lomthandazo, which has been heard by at least 11 million listeners on various national radio stations.

Apools, his siblings and cousins were all raised by his grandmother, Yekiwe Apools.

With his grandmother raising seven children, as the eldest he felt the need to try to help in any way he could, often neglecting his own childhood while doing so.

To help provide an additional income, he left school when he was 17 years old, which was a tough decision for him to make.

“Putting food on the table was very important for me, since my grandmother was not working and we depended solely on her grant and our child support grants,” said Apools.

While he continued to work hard for his family, his desire to become a singer grew stronger.

Growing up in a musical family, Apools, who is known by his stage name, Avocals, began singing from an early age, but it was only in 2019 that he began writing and composing songs.

Finally, last year, he got his big break when he was featured on Ilizwi Lomthandazo, by singers De Moss and Wolake Angazz.

Apools said, on the song, he was inspired to share the struggles and challenges he faced while growing up.

Ilizwi Lomthandazo is a prayer that seeks for strength and the ability to face our daily challenges and obstacles. It is also a plea for guidance and protection,” said Apools.

Since the song was released last year, it has been played on various radio stations, including Umhlobo Wenene FM, Tru FM, Kouga FM and Ukhozi FM.

Ilizwi Lomthandazo can also be streamed on all digital platforms.

Apools said the release of the song was a dream come true for him and he was amazed by the positive feedback with many people being able to relate to the song.

To continue to work hard to reach his goals, he is currently working on his debut extended play (EP) album, which will be released in November.

Apools said on the EP, listeners will get a further glimpse into his life’s journey and the struggles that he has faced.

“It’s a motivational EP filled with a lot of healing and motivational tracks,” said Apools

He said he hopes to be a good example for the younger generation from his community, despite the hardships he has faced.

To give back to the community, Apools said he plans to create platforms for young singers and rappers to showcase their talents, since there were not many safe spaces for musicians in the Kouga region.
