GQEBERHA – Rhino conservation will receive a boost when the Rhino Night Relay takes place in Gqeberha on 5 September, with funds raised through the event set to benefit the Kouga Rhino Sanctuary.

Founded in 2018 by Gwen and Timothy Young, the Rhino Night Relay is a 100% non-profit event created out of a passion for rhino conservation and enduro riding.

The annual event brings together off-road motorcycle riders, volunteers, sponsors and supporters, with all funds raised through rider entries, raffles and donations being donated to rhino conservation organisations.

“The Rhino Night Relay has never just been about motorcycles. It’s about people coming together to make a real difference. Every rider, sponsor, volunteer and spectator plays a part in protecting our rhinos, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received over the years,” said Gwen.

She said the event has supported various rhino conservation organisations since its inception, including Saving The Survivors, Kragga Kamma Game Park, The Rhino Orphanage, The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary and The Rhino Revolution.

Gwen said that in 2025, the Rhino Night Relay donated more than R29,350 to The Rhino Revolution, following a record donation of R26,050 in 2024.

She added that in 2026, funds raised will be donated to the Kouga Rhino Sanctuary, continuing the event’s commitment to supporting rhino conservation.

“The Rhino Night Relay is more than just a ride; it’s a community-driven event with a purpose. Every rider, sponsor and supporter plays a role in protecting one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered species,” said Gwen.

The 2026 event will take place at the Algoa Kart and Motorcycle Club in Gqeberha and will feature activities for riders of all ages and experience levels.

Gwen said the Calf Loop, named after a baby rhino, will take place from 12:00 to 13:00 and will offer younger riders a fun and safe daytime ride, with every child receiving a goodie bag.

She said the Amateur Loop, from 13:30 to 14:30, will provide an opportunity for adults who prefer not to ride at night to take part in the event.

Gwen further said the main event will take place from 16:00 to 20:00, with teams of two riders taking turns completing loops under the night sky.

While the riding remains the highlight of the event, she said spectators can enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere with food trucks, a licensed bar, a jumping castle, lucky draws, prizes and entertainment.

According to Gwen, the event has grown significantly since its first year in 2018, when approximately 80 riders participated despite freezing temperatures and heavy rain.

During the inaugural event, just over R10,000 was donated to Saving The Survivors.

She said the event continued to grow over the years, with donations increasing as more riders, sponsors and supporters joined the cause.

“We dedicate countless hours throughout the year planning the event alongside a dedicated team of volunteers and sponsors, with every contribution helping to create an unforgettable experience while raising funds for a different rhino organisation each year,” said Gwen.

The 2026 event currently has 64 sponsors, with The Turbo Shop as the main title sponsor.
