KOUGA – The R102 between Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp has reopened following the completion of repair work to a sinkhole caused by extensive damage to the existing stormwater infrastructure.
As previously reported, the road had been closed while repairs were carried out after investigations confirmed that the existing stormwater system had sustained significant damage, resulting in the formation of the sinkhole.
During the rehabilitation project, the damaged stormwater pipe was replaced with a larger-capacity pipe to improve stormwater conveyance and reduce the risk of future failures.
In a Facebook post, Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman thanked all those involved in restoring the route.
“A sincere thank you to our municipal team for their determination and hard work in driving this matter forward, and to the Provincial Department of Transport for responding to our call and acting swiftly to repair the road,” said Bornman.
He also acknowledged the impact the road closure had on the community.
“I understand the significant inconvenience this closure caused our residents, businesses, and everyone who relies on the R102. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support while the repairs were underway,” said Bornman.
He further expressed special appreciation to residents of Protea Street in Boskloof, where traffic had been diverted during the repair period.
“We know this resulted in increased traffic and disruption, and we sincerely appreciate the residents of Protea Street’s cooperation throughout the repair period,” said Bornman.
He said the project demonstrated the value of cooperation between different spheres of government.
“It is always encouraging to see different spheres of government working together to resolve challenges and restore critical infrastructure for our communities,” said Bornman.
Bornman wished motorists well as normal traffic resumes on the route.
