KOUGA – Repair works are underway on the R102 between Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp after investigations confirmed that a sinkhole on the route was caused by extensive damage to the existing stormwater infrastructure, with construction expected to continue for approximately two weeks.

According to the Kouga Municipality, the appointed contractor is currently on site and has commenced with the rehabilitation works.
“Significant progress has already been made, including the delivery of reinforced concrete stormwater pipes and construction materials, as well as excavation works to expose the damaged stormwater infrastructure,” the municipality said.
The statement confirmed that investigations found the existing stormwater system sustained extensive damage, resulting in the formation of the sinkhole.
The statement said to improve the long-term performance of the infrastructure, the existing stormwater pipe will be replaced with a larger-capacity pipe to improve stormwater conveyance and reduce the risk of future failures.
“We sincerely appreciate the intervention and support provided by the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Transport in addressing this critical infrastructure failure,” the statement said.
“We also extend our gratitude to residents, businesses and all road users for their patience and understanding while these essential repairs are being undertaken.”
The statement added that due to the extent of the damage and the complexity of the repair works, construction is expected to continue for approximately two weeks, subject to favourable weather conditions and unforeseen site conditions.
The statement said motorists are requested to exercise caution when travelling through the construction area, obey all temporary road signs, adhere to traffic accommodation measures, and follow the instructions of traffic controllers at all times.
“Kouga Municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the continued cooperation of the public while these important infrastructure repairs are completed,” the statement said.
