JEFFREYS BAY – Every child develops at their own pace, but how do we know when a child is simply taking their time, and when they may need a little extra support?

This is the focus of Building Strong Learners: Early Signs, Early Support, a free community event aimed at parents, preschool teachers and foundation phase educators in Jeffrey’s Bay and surrounding areas.

Taking place on 12 September 2026, the event will explore child development from birth through the toddler years and into the foundation phase, helping adults better understand the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children.

The aim is to equip parents and teachers with the knowledge to recognise developmental milestones and identify possible delays early, allowing children to receive the appropriate support when they need it.

The morning will bring together professionals from a variety of fields. Four occupational therapists will cover topics including neurodevelopment, primitive reflexes, hippotherapy, sensory integration and perceptual motor development.

Optometrist Leane Cilliers, who initiated the event, will explore the connection between developmental milestones and vision through play.

Two educational psychologists will discuss emotional school readiness for both parents and children, as well as provide relevant information on ADHD and ADD.

A traumatologist will address the impact trauma can have on a child’s development, while remedial specialist Corlene Vosloo will share insights into neurodiversity and remedial education.

Following the presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion panel and Q&A, allowing parents and teachers to ask questions and engage directly with the professionals.

The event will be held at the NG Church Da Gama Road Hall in Jeffrey’s Bay. Registration is from 08:30, with the programme running from 09:00 to 12:00, followed by the discussion panel from 12:00 to 12:30.
