Contractor begins R62 reconstruction between Kareedouw and Joubertina

KOU-KAMMA – The contractor appointed to reconstruct the washed-away section of the R62 between Kareedouw and Joubertina has officially commenced work, with South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) and Kou-Kamma Local Municipality introducing the contractor to local stakeholders and affected communities recently as reconstruction of the flood-damaged route gets underway.

As previously reported, the road collapse follows severe weather conditions in the Eastern Cape in May.

According to a Kou-Kamma Local Municipality statement, the reconstruction of the R62 is a critical project that will restore safe and reliable access for residents, businesses, farmers, emergency services, and all road users who depend on this important transport route.

The municipality has requested that community members cooperate with the contractor and construction personnel throughout the project, observe all road signs, speed restrictions and instructions from traffic controllers, avoid entering restricted construction areas, keep a safe distance from construction areas for their own safety, prioritise the safety of workers and fellow road users, and be patient as temporary delays and traffic disruptions may occur while the work is in progress.

“The contractor will be establishing the construction site and mobilising personnel, machinery, and equipment as preparations begin for the repair and restoration of this critical route,” the municipality said.

“Reconstruction is expected to take approximately three months following completion of the assessment phase,” the municipality said.

The municipality said the project marks an important step towards restoring safe access and improving connectivity for communities, businesses, farmers, and visitors following the severe flood damage experienced recently.

“Kou-Kamma Local Municipality welcomes the contractor to our municipality and appreciates the continued patience, cooperation, and understanding of all residents throughout the duration of the project,” the municipality said.

“Together, we are rebuilding stronger and safer infrastructure for our communities,” the municipality said.
